Including more than 400 acres of a former military base, Fort Worden State Park's past life as a point of defense for the Puget Sound has been overwritten by its current function, acting as an outdoor retreat and a historic site. Buildings like the Commanding Officer's House and the Coast Artillery Museum commemorate the fort's original purpose while the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and many miles of hiking and biking trails allow visitors to explore the region's natural splendor. A fully equipped conference center is also a part of the park, and families can camp overnight at one of two campgrounds. Located on the northern edge of Port Townsend, the park pushes out into the sound, featuring sandy beaches and soaring bluffs, and offering bountiful outdoor activities including boating, fishing, swimming and sunbathing.
